Everyone’s second favourite video game redemption story, Cyberpunk 2077, is getting a serious upgrade on Sony’s beefy PS5 Pro.
Thanks to the magic power of teraflops or megawatts or whatever it is that powers the PS5 Pro, Cyberpunk 2077 will benefit from 4k visuals, powered-up performance, advanced ray tracing, and more.
Starting with PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which “goes through each pixel, one by one, and upscales it using advanced artificial intelligence”. The result is sharper visuals, and anyone who’s played Cyberpunk 2077 will know it’s already a gorgeous game so I’m excited to see what the extra power can do.
Night City is beautifully lit, with neon signs illuminating futuristic cars and grimy alleyways, and this is set to get even better with a new upgrade to the in-game ray tracing. I’m not going to try and explain the technicalities, so here’s a quote straight from the PlayStation blog:
With the PS5 Pro Update, we implemented BVH8 (8-way Bounding Volume Hierarchy) support to implement ray-traced lighting, shadows, and reflections, bringing the lighting even closer to our artistic vision for this world. Imagine the sunlight catching off the front fairing of your Yaiba Kusanagi CT-3X as you park up, depart down a mysterious dark alley, and uncover secrets glowing under neon light. Players’ overall immersion in the world of Cyberpunk 2077 gets a serious boost from PS5 Pro.
One of the core benefits of the PS5 Pro is getting access to more visual and performance options, and this new update adds 3 new modes to Cyberpunk 2077:
- Ray Tracing Pro: The most visually advanced version of the game with all ray tracing effects cranked up. It runs at 30fps, or 40fps if you’ve got a VRR-enabled screen.
- Performance Mode: Prioritising the best possible framerate, you’ll get up to 90fps on VRR capable screens.
- Ray Tracing: Your “best of both” mode, it features select ray tracing features while maintaining a smooth 60fps
Don’t forget, Cyberpunk 2077 is part of the PS+ games collection currently so there are no excuses not to try it, especially if you’ve got a PS5 Pro.
The update arrives on April 8th and you can find out more on the PlayStation Blog.
