Yogscast Games has released another deep dive video for Rhell: Warped Worlds and Troubled Times, as well as confirming it’s been selected for the London Games Festival.
Following on from the first deep dive video for Rhell: Warped Worlds and Troubled Times, this new episode shows off another of the core game elements, namely spell casting. The team says: “In Rhell: Warped Worlds & Troubled Times, players must solve puzzles by casting spells made up of “runes” or magical keywords. Rather than offering a predetermined list of spells, the game allows players to experiment with magic. With over 40 unique runes and 102 million possible combinations, creativity is encouraged, making the act of casting spells a discovery instead of execution.”
We’ve also got a written example of how the combo spells work, from the press release, but first up, here’s the trailer:
Players can combine ice and smoke to create snow and can cast this spell on Rhell to make her a snowball and roll around, picking up more snow and growing larger as you roll. Also, you can rewind, slow down, or speed up time. Interestingly, if you try to slow down and speedup time in the same spell you’ll end up pausing time completely! You can cast a stream of red hot fire magic into a river and transform it completely into lava and much more.
The spell system is designed to intrigue, excite, and surprise players. Spellcasting feels like problem-solving, as runes function as keywords. Each rune has distinct properties and can be combined in unique ways making play feel more intentional and personal.
“It is possible that the most exciting spells you cast in Rhell are the ones you stumble upon, and potentially ones we’ve not even discovered,” says game creator Alice Jarratt from SlugGlove. “The system is built to reward experimentation and creativity rather than forcing players to memorise spell formulae.”
Yogscast Games also confirmed that Rhell has been selected as one of the indie games that will be featured at London Games Festival, which runs from April 13th to April 19th. The developers will be present to show the game off at the event, too.
Rhell: Warped Words & Troubled Times is coming to PC via Steam on March 12th.
