Kadokawa has announced the release date for upcoming roguelike dungeon crawler, SHINONOME ABYSS: The Maiden Exorcist, and it’s coming this month.
Developed by WODAN and published by Kadokawa, SHINONOME ABYSS: The Maiden Exorcist is coming to PC and Switch on March 25th. The Steam page confirms three types of experience, as well:
- Harai – Fixed maps that challenge you to solve specific puzzles
- Misogi – Escape randomly-generated maps in a more casual experience
- Gyou – Hardcore randomly-generated maps with a heavy focus on survival
The development team features folks who have worked on the Resident Evil, Parasite Eve, Devil May Cry (4/5), and Shiren the Wanderer titles, so there’s some pedigree involved here.
Here’s the official word on what the game is all about:
A strategic roguelike horror game in which the player plays as Yono, a Miko (Maiden Exorcist) who is searching for her missing exorcist brother and must take on a mansion where many mononoke (ghosts) are lurking within. Using sound is the key strategy to succeed in the game.
You can identify the type of mononoke by listening to the noises coming from neighbouring rooms, or you can lure mononoke into a traproom with your voice in order to defeat them. Sometimes, instead of defeating mononoke, making good use of their unique characteristics can provide you with a big advantage on beating the dungeon. It is possible to utilize action game skills to overcome some of the challenges, but the key to success often lies in developing strategies through careful observation. Players can also progress through the game even if they are not familiar with action games.
There is going to be “a lot of extra content” released for SHINONOME ABYSS: The Maiden Exorcist, as the publisher promotes it leading up to the March 25th release date. There’s a short manga already up on the site, and the team says reading this “may help understanding the game better”.
