Developer Save Sloth Studios has announced the release date for deckbuilding title The Royal Writ, and it’s coming on August 7th, published by Yogscast Games.
As we say, it’s a deck building title where you have permadeath, and lots of characters that stand out thanks to a lovely art style.
“The Royal Writ rips up the rulebook and offers a unique lane-based deckbuilder where sentiment and loyalty go out the window in the pursuit of victory,” said Simon Byron, Managing Director, Yogscast Games. “As the self-proclaimed home of the roguelike deckbuilder, we’re excited to see our community build weird armies, watch them die, mourn them briefly, then throw their replacements into battle five minutes later.”
The Royal Writ combines picture-book visuals, delightful humour, and frequent fatalities in a deckbuilding strategy game where permadeath is real, and favourite characters will probably die. The goal? Knock the enemy’s health to zero before reaching their base, with players competing across ever-changing battle layouts of one to three rows, delivering damage through power and multiplication modifiers.
Players must build the perfect squad of cannon-fodder and clutch-carrying creatures, balancing strategy and a slight disregard for their troops’ feelings. With a deck limit and permanent death looming, fighters can be upgraded between battles through various events, from horse racing to a trip to the dentist, earning relics and gear, which can help dodge hazards like anthills, spike pits, creeks, and mushroom fields.
When we had a chance to play it back in April, Lyle Pendle said: “I have to admit that it took me longer than I expected to understand how best to succeed in The Royal Writ, but once I did I had a blast. This isn’t just another Roguelike deck builder, with combat with more complexities than it seems and so many creative ways to upgrade your army. The Royal Writ is a game to watch, because it could just be your next obsession.”
The Royal Writ is coming to PC on August 7th.
