Hell is Us is an action-adventure game in the Resident Evil mould. It’s not a horror by any real metric, but it features a series of connected areas filled with secrets, shortcuts, mysteries, puzzles, and danger.
Simply getting around the nation of Hadea is simple enough, but it throws enigmas and curios at you left, right, and centre, and you can spend hours carrying around items before you find the NPC who wants or needs them. Sometimes you can miss things altogether. As a result, it’s a game of back-tracking and tangents, so completing in a linear manner might simply not be viable.
Either way, we’ve been through it, and are here to provide a little guidance as to just how long it takes to beat Hell is Us.
How long is the main story?
It’s hard to say exactly how long it would take to just mainline the story, but my initial playthrough with a fair chunk of time devoted to solving mysteries and helping out the NPCs I met took me 29 hours and 38 minutes.
What makes Hell is Us difficult to track time-wise is the sheer amount of side content that drops seamlessly into the critical path. You’ll meet numerous NPCs as you move Remi through the horrors of Hadea, and most will ask you for something. It’s incredibly difficult to find an item you know someone wants and resist the urge to take it to them.
There’s also a bunch of side activities such as anomalous Time Loops, which you can close, and Good Deeds that you perform for people. Earning the rewards for these requires that you trek back to the Warden’s Rest hub to hand them in, which isn’t much of a slog but which does take up time if you do it a lot.
Each area is filled with side paths, shortcuts, and snippets of lore, and it’s difficult to ignore some puzzles when Hell is Us often provides just enough of the solution to make you really want to figure out the rest. You’ll also backtrack a lot to open special Lymbic Chests that require specific keys that you can find literally anywhere. There are also research items to bring back to your NPC partner, Tania, who will research them and reveal hidden Vaults of Knowledge, usually hidden in hard-to-reach areas.
Overall, I’d suggest you could shave at least ten to twelve hours off my completion time if you mainlined the story.
Is there a point of no return?
Not really. You can leave the critical path at any time right up until the climax of the story, and it’s fairly clear you’re at the end when you essentially trigger the final cutscene.
Can you continue playing after the campaign ends?
You can load your final save, which drops you back into the world with a few states changed. For example, the finale of the game seems to have still happened, but you can go back around the various areas completing mysteries you left, opening Vaults of Knowledge, and completing Good Deeds and Time Loops.
Now you know how long it takes to beat Hell is Us.
