Starfield preview: 2026 is a big year for Bethesda

Return to the far reaches of the galaxy.
Starfield 2026 preview

This September marks three years since Starfield released. It may not have had the same impact The Elder Scrolls or Fallout had for Bethesda, but that’s not to say it isn’t a lot of fun. Instead of a nuclear wasteland or a high fantasy setting, it was the vastness of space that captured players’ imaginations. Now, in 2026, there’s plenty to look forward to in Starfield. We recently saw what will be coming to the game this year, and while there’s some great content, it will also be making its appearance on a brand new platform.

The first big announcement is that Starfield is launching for PS5 on April 7, 2026. Everything since launch will be available come release date. Along with all the new content, the PlayStation’s hardware will be put to good use. While it was something we expected at some point, hearing the announcement was great. Many more players will get to experience Starfield. If playing on a PlayStation 5 Pro, Pro Performance Mode will prioritise a higher-target FPS or select Pro Visual Mode.

On top of the Starfield PS5 announcement, there will be a huge update and Story DLC coming in 2026. The Free Lanes update adds so many new features to the game. We spent a lot of time seeing how they factor into the player experience. For the nerds out there (like us!) who want total control over customisation, the new X-Tech resource further upgrades weapons and gives them specific focuses. We saw how a Grendel goes from a good gun into a great one, all through specific traits that can be built upon.

Another cool feature was the ability to use cruise control within star systems. It provides quicker travel, but also allows you to step away from your console and explore your ship until you reach your destination. There are new locations, places of interest, and dungeons; a new land vehicle called the Moon Jumper; outpost improvements and a cute Milliewhale pet that can be customised with some fancy skins; and new crew members, Muria and a mini-bot (who’s both cute and can attack enemies! One feature we love were the action figures and their storage, along with playsets that can be customised as well.

As for the paid DLC, Terran Armada provides a brand new questline, as well as all the things you’d expect. New locations and characters, systems, and rewards, and a bunch of new quests, too. From what we saw, players are going to love it. Starfield in 2026 is bringing some fantastic content and features. Thereare also five new Tracers Alliance adventures that are available right now. What we got from the preview was a clear vision of the future of Starfield, and it starts with the release on PS5 next month.

As a fan of Starfield at release, this preview made me want to dive in right away. In an effort to get ready for the release in April, we’ve dived back in on Xbox Series X|S. There’s no slowing down for the huge RPG. With the Free Lanes update and the Terra Armada DLC coming soon, there’s every reason to go and remind yourself why Starfield is a slept on hit. It might not have been to everyone’s taste, but there’s no denying Bethesda’s love and dedication for its space opera epic.
