Ghost of Yōtei deep dive shows off new Director modes and more

You get a pet wolf!

The latest State of Play focused on Ghost of Yōtei and gave us a good look at combat, exploration, new modes and more.

Releasing on 2 October, Ghost of Yōtei stars Atsu who is out for revenge on the shadowy cabal that killed her family. Unlike Jin Sakai from the previous game in the series, Atsu has no concern for honour when it comes to her mission and will use whatever underhanded tactics are needed to secure her revenge. Take a look at the full deep dive below:

Along with improvements to combat and other mechanics, here are 3 other highlights:

Player Choice
Sucker Punch Creative Directors Jason Connell and Nate Fox took us through the greater emphasis on player choice in Ghost of Yōtei. Whether you want to prioritise combat, story or exploration, the game can flex to suit your play style and can stop things getting overwhelming. Defeating enemies and interrogating them will unlock clues (in the form of playing cards) and as you collect more of these they become leads that’ll take you to wild and dangerous regions of the map as you follow these leads to their conclusions.

New Friends
Despite being full of rage, Atsu seems to make a lot of friends. Known as the Wolf Pack, with one member being an actual wolf, this group of allies contains everything from partners who will aid you in the field to merchants that you’ll need to interact with for quests. Rather than trying to remember where everyone (there’s a fair few members of the Wolf Pack) and zig-zagging back and forth the map every time you need to speak to someone, in Ghost of Yōtei you can just set up camp and invite key allies to come to you directly. The system looked very convenient and a welcome addition for such an expansive open world

More Director Modes
The windy, black and white Kurosawa mode was a fan favourite in Ghost of Tsushima and it’s back again here. It’s now joined by two more Director modes too: Miike Mode, inspired by Takashi Miike (13 Assassins), brings the camera in closer and ups the blood and mud flying around on screen, giving a grittier feel to the game. Watanabe mode, based on the work of Samurai Champloo anime director Shinichirō Watanabe, looks particularly interesting with its lo-fi beats soundtracking all the exploration you’ll be doing.

We also learned more about the games soundtrack, which is sounding incredible. New limited edition Ghost of Yōtei consoles and controllers were also announced.

Ghost of Yōtei releases on 2 October for PS5,
