The key to success in The Alters is teamwork. Unfortunately, every version of Jan Dolski you create has at least one glaring personality flaw that makes them very difficult to get along with.
Whether it’s the Technician’s temper, the Scientist’s arrogance, or the Refiner’s incessant optimism (I didn’t mind it, but some of the Alters sure did), it can be really tough to get the Alters to just, well, get along together.
And you can’t force it, either. Luckily, there’s a few ways to adjust their moods, which makes them react to Jan and to one another in more positive ways. So just how do you make your Alters happy in The Alters?
Talk to them
This may seem obvious, but it’s important. Now and then you’ll see a white text box appear by their portrait. If it happens, go and see them, because it means they want to talk. Sometimes it’s because you found something of sentimental value, or they have mission information, or because they just want bringing up to date. Either way, don’t ignore them.

Give them gifts
While out in the world you’ll often come across scattered drop pods containing Jan’s old possessions. Some of them are total red herrings, but each Alter has something that means something to them, such as the Technician’s multitool or the Doctor’s homemade mug. Giving them a gift often brightens your Alters’ moods.
Feed them
While you can subside on “mush”, it’s not very exciting. Once you have the Greenhouse module you can harvest raw foods in exchange for Organics, and you can use it to make Cooked Meals which improve your Alters’ disposition. Once you unlock the Doctor, you can also produce Feasts, which cost 3 Cooked Meals but massively boost morale.

Spend time with them
Once you construct the Social Room Module you can get your Alters together for movie night, or to play a game of Beer Pong. Doing so improves their mood and your relationship.
Build Modules that improve their mental health
The Gym, Social Room, Contemplation Room, Park Bench, and Private Cabin are all Modules that you don’t need to build to survive – and indeed cost valuable resources – but which allow your Alters to decompress and enjoy themselves a little on the mission. Both the Guard and Shrink can positively affect an Alter’s morale by spending time with them in the Contemplation Room, and they’ll use the Gym and Park Bench on their own.
Hopefully you now know how to keep your Alters happy in The Alters.
