Monster Hunter Wilds is a massive game, full of things to do, but it’s not entirely clear how you can play story missions with friends, and the multiplayer is still a tad confusing.
In our handy guide, we’re going to talk you through a few ways you can do it, though there are (as always) a few caveats that you need to be aware of going in. First up is the most important one: you can only play Monster Hunter Wilds story missions with friends if you are either at the same point, or have already played the said story missions. This means you cannot join in if someone is ahead of you. This actually stays true even after you enter high rank, as the game precludes you from entering fights you either are not ready for, or haven’t seen story segments leading up to.
With that in mind then, here’s our Monster Hunter Wilds multiplayer guide.
Monster Hunter Wilds multiplayer guide
Link Invitation
The simplest and quickest way to play Monster Hunter Wilds story missions with friends is to send them a “link invitation”. In game, you can press Start to bring up the menu, and go along to the “Link invitation” option within the “Communication” section. Send an invite to your friends (four people can play together), and they must accept.
From here on, you will quite literally be “linked” together, and whenever anyone starts a quest the other players will get a notification, and can hold the start button to bring it up, and join that quest.
A word of note, this doesn’t mean “Oh I’ve started a story mission, so they can join”. No, this quite definitely means that once you see the “Quest begins” text appear on the screen, they will get that notification and be able to join. Then they will load in, and run to your location, and help you out.
If you’re just doing a random hunt, and you’ve selected it from Alma, the quest giver, they can join from that moment. However, if you are out in the Wilds (pun intended) you will have to beat up whichever monster you’re going for before you get “quest begins”. In story missions, the message usually appears right after the cut-scene before it.
Monster Hunter Wilds multiplayer | Squad Lobby
Another way to ensure you are able to play with friends is to always be in a Squad Lobby. Near the main tent in each encampment there is a large tent (where you can find the endemic life quests). Just outside you’ll find the NPC who will explain Squads and let you create one.
Once you’ve set up, or joined a squad, when you start the game from the main menu, make sure you select “Squad Lobby” as your entry point. This will mean that whenever you post a quest, others who are online in the squad can also see it on the quest board. It’s not quite as efficient as Link Invitation, but it does work.
Environment Link
This is a similar method to the Squad Lobby, only it puts you into a mode where your friends can join you and roam the Wilds just hunting and gathering. We found this to be less useful for organising grinding and specific hunts, and mainly used it for just chilling and exploring the maps.
So there you have it, with our Monster Hunter Wilds multiplayer guide, hopefully you’re able to get playing with your friends and making the most of your time in the Wilds.
