Steps are a crucial commodity in Blue Prince that dictate how much you can explore and backtrack on any given day. Once you run out of steps, you have to Call it a Day and start again. Therefore keeping an eye on your Steps is very important. And luckily, it is possible to increase your steps, thus making your exploration that much easier. Here at Loot Level Chill, we’ve spent hours poring over Blue Prince, and have a comprehensive guide to help you get more Steps out of each day.
SPOILER WARNING
As with most things in Blue Prince, part of the fun is self-discovery, and below this spoiler warning we will be revealing plenty of secrets of the game. We encourage you to try and find out the solutions to puzzles on your own to get the full experience of Blue Prince. Only read on if you do not mind some of those secrets being spoiled.
What are Steps?
Steps are a measure of how far you have left to travel in a given day. Once you set foot in a new room, or even a new area outside, you will spend a Step. You start the day with just 50 Steps, so you can’t just explore freely and have to plan where you want to travel. Once you reach zero, the game will automatically end your day and you will have to start again on the following day, with a brand-new house to create.
How to get more Steps in Blue Prince
Thankfully there are numerous ways to increase your steps, which we will list here. More steps will give you more time to explore, and scrutinize over new rooms and clues to help you piece together more of the mystery of Blue Prince.
Draft purple rooms (Bedrooms)
Bedrooms – the purple rooms you can draft will often give you a boon of extra steps when you enter them. The Guest Bedroom for example gives you an additional 10 steps the first time you enter. Whereas the Nursery gives you an additional 5 steps whenever you draft and enter a bedroom in the future (including the Nursery itself). Just bear in mind Bedrooms are often dead ends, so you don’t want to draw so many that you block off all the routes of expansion in the house.
Eat food
The standard way to increase your steps is to eat food. The main food consists of apples (2 steps), bananas (3 steps), and oranges (5 steps). The Pantry will always have a piece of fruit for you, and the Secret Garden will spread fruit out across your existing rooms for you to hunt down. Rooms may also randomly have fruit in them as a bonus.
Fruit can also be bought from the Kitchen for a small fee, and may also be available in the Commissary too. In the Kitchen, you can also buy larger meals, which afford you more steps, at the cost of more Coins. Finally, the Dining Room serves up a big meal but it only unlocks once you reach Rank 8 (it can be any room). Then, you can return to the Dining Room and eat the meal for 20 Steps. You also get a bonus of 10 Steps if the meal coordinates with a room you have drafted in your house. The meal does change each time though.
Experiments
If you draft the Laboratory, you can use the Terminal there to begin an experiment. Then you choose from one of three random actions, and one of three random results. Sometimes these results can reward you with Steps, so you could set up an experiment that gives you steps each time you meet a certain criterion.
Items
Whilst not technically extra Steps, the Running Shoes item will not deduct Steps occasionally when you move around the house or estate, thus essentially giving you more steps to play with. Additionally, the Salt Shaker item adds an extra Step gained whenever you eat some food.
Permanent Addition
There is a Permanent Addition called the Apple Orchard which when you have unlocked it, grants you an additional 20 Steps at the start of each day permanently. This means that rather than 50 Steps, you begin with 70, which can make a huge difference. To understand how to get the Apple Orchard Permanent Addition, check out our guide here.
So now you know the many ways you can acquire additional Steps in Blue Prince.
