Nintendo Switch has sold over 150 million units

Only the DS has been better for Nintendo.

Nintendo has confirmed that the Nintendo Switch has sold over 150 million units, currently totalling 150.86 million, surpassing all but the original DS in sales.

It’s an astonishing number, and despite the Nintendo Switch 2 being announced, with no firm release date (although a showcase is due in April), it wouldn’t be a surprise if it still continued to sell. You’d expect discounted hardware after the Switch 2 launches, as well, so who knows how high that number will go.

For comparison sakes, the Nintendo 3DS has sold 75.94 million units, and previous “home console” hardware the Wii U sold 13.56 million. The Wii has sold 101.63 million units, with the Nintendo DS at 154.02 million. The Game Boy is one of the nearest high sellers, at 118.69 million.

However, where the Switch has true shone is the fact it’s sold 1,359.90 million software units. Even the DS didn’t get that high (948.76), nor did the Wii (921.85). You can see the full stats for the console sales on the official Nintendo Japan website, here.

As mentioned, the Nintendo Switch 2 is next up, with a Nintendo Direct showcase coming on April 2nd, this year. The console itself will be released in 2025, which is obviously rather exciting.

The trailer above does give away some info about the new console, which obviously is larger and has a more rounded form factor. There’s a heavy suggestion the Joy-Con controllers are usable in some form as a mouse, which was rumoured before the announcement as well. We also know that Switch games will be compatible on cartridge, and will slot in near the same sort of area as the old console.

Next up, however, for Nintendo, is Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, hitting the original Switch on March 20th. The original game was a Wii U game, and is one of the last of the games people wanted ported over to the new console. Nintendo says that “This visually enhanced version of the epic sci-fi RPG features additional content – including new story elements.”

Nintendo Switch 2 is coming in 2025.
