During the September 2026 Nintendo Direct, the publisher has revealed the release date and a whole lot more for the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
A fair amount had been suggested to be coming before this Direct, but getting the actual release date for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the main thing to take away. It’s coming on November 5th. This reconfirms that it’s 2026 as promised at the initial announcement, and adds to a massive end of the year with Grand Theft Auto VI and now The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time seeing out 2026 in style, we hope.
Shigeru Miyamoto is the host, of course, for the 40th anniversary direct. He explains in the Direct there are “various initiatives” from now until next year. And that the movie will be out on April 30th, 2027. And the title? Well of course you’ll guess: The Legend of Zelda. No subtitle, and Miyamoto says once you see the film, you’ll understand why. That said, for now that’s all you’re getting. More on the film will be revealed later.
Koji Kondo also joined the Direct to talk about the music for the series, to reveal that a live concert for the music will be happening across Japan in 2027, North America (Chicago), Europe (London), and Australia.
Eiji Aonuma is up next, to talk about the remake we all came for. He talked about the original release, and how it was the first Zelda game to have a 3D camera, referring to it as a “defining moment” for the series. Aonuma acknowledged that Ocarina of Time had a different appeal to the likes of Breath of the Wild, and then started playing it. A very different looking Link appears and, well, you should watch the footage. It’s stunning.
Anyway, it’s been confirmed you can now jump like in the modern games, but in the original jumping was automatically triggered when you were near a ledge. Link can swim, as well, and explore for treasure underwater. You can see his Tunic remains wet after leaving the water, too. Motion controls, and a similar menu system for weapons returns from the later games, and yes, Navi is back. Somehow you can hum a tune to your Switch 2 and it will let Link learn the song, too. Oh and there’s a real-life Ocarina you can play if you’d rather not hum, because why not!
“The game has been reborn”, Aonuma explained, before saying the game will be fully voiced (aside Link, obviously). Then the release date: November 5th, 2026.
New Amiibo has been revealed as well, which are coming in 2027 (Young Link and Young Zelda). And of course, a special edition Nintendo Switch 2 that looks pretty special. Zelda green with yellow trimmings. I could hear the viewers collectively saying “ooft” at that one. October 29th is the date for that, and there will also be a Switch 2 Pro Controller, and case. The game doesn’t come with the console, however, so do note that.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5th.
