The Blood of Dawnwalker dev says “each instalment in the series will be a standalone game with its own story”

The future is more games.

It may be slightly unusual to reveal more in a game series before the first one is out, but that’s what Rebel Wolves has done with The Blood of Dawnwalker.

Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, Game Director and Co-Founder of Rebel Wolves explained a bit about last night’s SGF reveal, which appeared to show a bit more of The Blood of Dawnwalker’s narrative than some were expecting.

Tomaszkiewicz explained: “I have a feeling that today’s presentation may have surprised many of you who did not expect Coen’s saga to move into modern times. However, I would like to emphasize that each installment in the series will be a standalone game with its own story, without narrative cliffhangers, unresolved plot threads, or time travel ideas. Since forming Rebel Wolves, we have been very clear that we aim for The Blood of Dawnwalker to be a self-contained story, and now, as we approach the release of the first chapter, we wanted to shed a bit more light on our wider perspective and tease where the story ultimately leads”

The reason for this explanation, then, is because the CGI trailer showing off the “future” of the series showed the main protagonist, and seemingly the antagonist as well, suggesting it might all span multiple games. Fans had taken to the internet and voiced concerns that this means the story is pointless to play, given you know how the game will end.

Bandai Namco said: “The villains of The Blood of Dawnwalker were in the spotlight of the Summer Game Fest trailers, but the saga has only just begun, and a journey across eras and continents awaits. The future of the series aims to take players across different eras in history, introducing new locations, antagonists, and stories.

The CGI teaser shows where the dark fantasy saga is heading. Players can see Coen in completely different surroundings than the ones they are used to – a modern, 21st-century setting, offering a glimpse of where the overarching plot ultimately leads. As the developers revealed, the next instalments of Dawnwalker franchise will span centuries, continents, and cultures across the globe.”

Jakub Szamałek, Narrative Director at Rebel Wolves added: “I love the potential that lies within Coen, as well as his powers and abilities as a Dawnwalker. His journey begins in a dark 14th-century fantasy world – a setting players deeply enjoy – and while it may feel familiar, the unique Carpathian Mountains setting will allow us to surprise them more than once. The next installments of his saga will bring new stories and new characters, but they will take place in different eras, locations, and cultures. Writing the narrative for projects of this scale is an incredibly satisfying undertaking. And while Coen and Brencis’ conflict will reach its conclusion in The Blood of Dawnwalker, attentive players will certainly come across breadcrumbs related to the overarching plot spanning the saga. I would love to share more, but for now, let’s wait for September 3 – the release of the game.”

The Blood of Dawnwalker is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on September 3rd.
