Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 | How to blacksmith

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 blacksmith guide

A lot of the tasks in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 require a lot of effort, and it might not be something you’re prepared for. Many open world games simplify crafting, but making anything takes patience and skill when you’re blacksmithing in KCD2. One of the earlier quests requires you to craft a horseshoe in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and while it sounds relatively simple, it opens your eyes to just how tricky it can be to blacksmith early on. Luckily, we’ve put together a guide that will show you just how blacksmithing works, and how you’ll be a pro in no time.

Listen carefully

When you arrive in Tachov to mee the blacksmith, he’ll eventually talk you through how to make your very first sword. While much of this knowledge helps to craft items in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, there are a few things you need to be aware of. However, before we get to that, listen carefully to every aspect of blacksmithing, and if required, ask the blacksmith to train you again as he’ll happily repeat the process to you.

A breakdown of blacksmithing

Blacksmithing is a simple process, but if you do not follow the steps correctly, it will all be for nothing. Here’s a quick breakdown of the basics.

  • Stoke the fires by blowing on the forge with R2/RT
  • Move item (if large enough) over the forge until it turns a light red to a vibrant, bright yellow
  • Move to the anvil and strike with the hammer (R2/RT)
  • Move back to the forge and repeat the process until prompted to ‘quench and finish,’ which basically means you place it in the barrel of water to cool.

Some things to remember when crafting anything is hit the item with a steady rhythm. Sparks will fly at the optimal area of the item. When they stop and you feel a dull thud, move the item with the left stick to hit elsewhere and continue watching the sparks fly into the air. Rotate the item with Square/X and continue the process with the same caution as before. Once it starts to turn red again, move back to the forge and heat it up until it turns that whiteish yellow. Another key thing to remember is strike evenly and balanced. If you focus too much on one area, the item with lose its shape.

Repeat the process early on

You might not spend a lot of time being a blacksmith in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 as you may prefer buying your equipment or simply looting from fallen soldiers, but if you want to get to grips with it, spend plenty of time practicing in Tachov. It’s a great location for this as it is right next to the first bed you unlock, so spending ten minutes or so upon waking up will set you up nicely for the day, as well as giving you the skills you need when crafting more impressive items later on.
