CONTROL Resonant guide – How to change difficulty and use assists

Need an assist?

Control Resonant can be a fast and frenetic game at times. With enemies on the floor, walls and in the sky, plus all sorts of particle and dilation effects its easy to get overwhelmed during combat.

If you’re looking for traditional difficulty options they do exist but are a little tucked away and the game also offers an impressive array of modifiers to tailor the game to your tastes.

How to change the difficulty in Control Resonant?

Head to the Gameplay section of the options menu. Don’t bother scrolling down, you’re after Assist mode. The game will give you a little warning about this, saying the default difficulty is the intended one, so ignore that and activate Assist Mode which will give you access to 4 pre-set difficulty options plus a load of different modifiers.

I’ll explain everything below but just feel free to tweak settings to your own tastes. We’ve had a few people on the team use Assist Mode, with one upping Dylan’s damage output slightly while nerfing the enemies by the same amount so combat was still a challenge but a wee bit more manageable. At the other end of the spectrum I used Invincibility and One Hit Kills to let me get through multiple missions for guide-writing purposes. As the Burger King says, have it your way.

Here’s what the preset difficulty options do:

  • Custom: Based on your choices from the individual modifiers
  • Field Agent: Your classic “story mode”, where the exploration and narrative are the focus so combat is dialled back to be much more manageable.
  • Strategist: Essentially a “normal” mode. Enemies hit hard and will kill you if you goof about too much, so you’ll need to focus in every encounter.
  • Ranger: Emphasises your survivability rather than boosting your fire power, helping you stay in the fight longer.

CONTROL Resonant review

Outside of these presets you have access to multiple options, some of which are sliders while others are toggles. Here’s what they do:

  • Power Recovery Speed: Dial this up to recover more power from all sources
  • Incoming Damage: Reduce this and Dylan will take far less damage from enemies
  • Outgoing Damage: The higher this is, the more damage Dylan will do.
  • Outgoing Falter: Increase the Falter dealt by Dylan
  • Perfect Dodge Window: Increase this slider to make the dodge window more forgiving
  • Enemy Projectile Speed: Lower this value to slow down projectile speed, making them easier to dodge
  • Enhanced Melee Magnetising: Enable this and Dylan will auto warp to enemies from a greater distance
  • Immortality: Dylan takes damage but can’t die
  • One Hit Kills: All enemies, including bosses, die from a single hit, whether it’s melee or ranged
  • One Hit Falters: When enabled, enemies that can be Faltered will do so following a single hit.
  • Enemy Aggression: Toggle between low/medium/high to define how many enemies can attack you at once

As you can see there are a ton of ways to tailor the game to your tastes, whether it’s making it easier or cranking up the challenge. However you use Assist Mode, it’s a great feature and one I’d love to see in more games.
