Monster Hunter Wilds: How to beat Rathian
General Info
Name: Rathian
Monster Type: Flying Wyvern
Known Habitats: Plains, Forest, Basin
Characteristics:
Fire-breathing female wyverns known as the “Queens of the Land.” Their powerful legs and venomous tails make them efficient ground hunters. At times, Rathian and Rathalos can be sighted hunting as a couple. After laying eggs, Rathian are extremely watchful of their nests. Proceed with extra caution, as a mother will move swiftly to protect her young.
Special Attack: Weak Roar, Minor Wind Pressure, Fireblight, Poison.
Strategy
Weak Point: Mouth
Breakables: Wings x2
Tail Sever: Yes
Helpful Hints:
Another classic fight in the Monster Hunter series, the Rathian is a familiar, but still formidable foe. As a flying wyvern, a key tactic is to bring Flash Pods along to stun her and take her from the skies, giving you time to do damage. Aside from her aggressive flying, the Rathian will make frequent use of her poisonous tail, by doing a vertical flip to catch anyone underneath or in front of her and inflicting Poison on them. To avoid this, either position yourself under her wings, to the side of her legs or become proficient in dodging the looping motion. Ultimately a tail sever will dramatically reduce the tail loop’s range (although it can technically still poison you) which means you can spend more time underneath dealing damage. After breathing fire, the Rathian is open to a free wound strike so keep this in mind too.
Weaknesses
Weapons: Any weapon should be focussed on the Head to do the most damage.
Effects: Fireblight is nullified completely, and the Legs have high resistance to most effects completely. Dragonblight is slightly more effective.
Elements: Thunder or Dragon-element weapons are the most effective.
Status Effects: All status effects are possible and quite effective, with the exception of Poison which is less effective.
Items: Flash Pods and Traps will work.
