If you want to stay alive in Monster Hunter Wilds you’ll need the best armour you can get. And that doesn’t just mean crafting it from the toughest monsters, upgrading it often at Gemma’s forge. But to do so you’ll need a special material that’s not always easy to get hold of. Luckily, we know exactly how the process works, and so will you when you’ve read our Monster Hunter Wilds armor upgrade guide.
MONSTER HUNTER WILDS ARMOR UPGRADE GUIDE
You’ll first unlock the ability to upgrade your armour by visiting Gemma after completing the main story quest, Chapter 2-1: Towards Fervent Fields. She will tell you that you can do it upon your return to Base Camp.
HOW TO GET ARMOR SPHERES
There are several ways to get hold of Armor Spheres. The first and most obvious is to complete hunts. Monster Hunter Wilds does away with mini objectives and instead simply rewards a small number of Armor Spheres each time you complete a hunt, which makes it a lot easier to farm them.
The second and less reliable way is to hope your various material and resources gatherers bring them back for you after you unlock High Rank, but this is a rare occurrence.
Finally, the most reliable – but expensive way – is to visit the Smelting Forge at the Oilwell Basin Base Camp, and pay Roqul to smelt them for you from monster parts. It’s easy enough to farm low level monsters for the first few tiers of Armor Sphere, but soon you’ll need to spend a lot of points to get any. The Smelting Forge is unlocked after completing the main story quest, Chapter 2-4: The Long-Forgotten Flame.
WHEN SHOULD I UPGRADE MY ARMOUR?
While it’s probably tempting to upgrade right away, it’s worth saving your Armor Spheres until you at least start to craft Rarity 5 gear. If you do want to upgrade right away, be prepared to grind a lot of Spheres and use them on armour you’ll soon be leaving behind.
