Assassin’s Creed Shadows lets players taken on the mantle of two protagonists. For much of the beginnings of the story, Naoe is the main character. As incredible as she is, Yasuke is a powerhouse who’s integral to the story. It isn’t clear how players can become the famous samurai, so we’ve put together a guide that shows you just how and when he becomes available to play. So, without further ado, here’s how to play as Yasuke in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Play through the Assassin’s Creed Shadows main campaign
Yasuke isn’t available at the start of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. He can’t be switched to until a certain quest is finished. Play through the main story as Naoe until ‘Temple of the Horseman’ begins. After meeting Lord Mitsuhide, Naoe will go to Honnoji Temple to assassinate someone important. Once there, find the target after taking out multiple soldiers. When reaching the area of assassination, a cutscene will trigger featuring Yasuke.
Lightning and Thunder
Once the cutscene has played out, a new quest will begin called ‘Lightning and Thunder.’ This is when Yasuke becomes available. Following completion of this quest, he will then become available to play alongside Naoe. This is where the story opens up and multiple questlines become available. To switch between the two, go to the inventory and press Square or X. Alternatively, fast travel to any unlocked location and hold in Square or X to go there as the alternate character.
